What is VIP? Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a naturally occurring neuropeptide with a wide array of functions, primarily known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.
Possible Benefits of VIP
Modulates the immune system: VIP helps balance the body's immune responses by regulating helper T-cells (Th1 and Th2 pathways). This can reduce excessive inflammation in conditions like autoimmune diseases.
Reduces chronic inflammation: By suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines, VIP has shown a therapeutic effect in models of rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease). In a clinical trial for CIRS, VIP therapy was shown to correct multiple inflammatory markers.
Protects against oxidative stress: VIP promotes tissue repair and has protective effects against oxidative stress.
Lowers blood pressure: VIP is a potent vasodilator, meaning it widens blood vessels. This improves blood flow and reduces arterial blood pressure
Protects the heart: The peptide helps protect against cardiac ischemia and reperfusion injuries.
Treats pulmonary hypertension: Due to its vasodilatory effects, VIP has been given "orphan drug" status by the FDA for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, a fatal disease often associated with a VIP deficiency. Benefits for the respiratory system
Promotes bronchodilation: VIP helps relax the airways and improves breathing, offering potential relief for conditions like asthma.
Reduces lung inflammation: The peptide can significantly reduce inflammation in the lungs.
May aid in neurodegenerative diseases: In conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, VIP may help decrease neuroinflammation and promote neuroplasticity.
Supports nerve regeneration: It may also aid in nerve regeneration in conditions involving grey matter atrophy, such as CIRS.
Coordinates circadian rhythms: VIP helps synchronize the body's internal clock, which regulates sleep-wake cycles.
Regulates digestion: VIP controls many digestive processes, including the secretion of water, electrolytes, and enzymes. It also relaxes smooth muscles in the stomach and intestines to regulate motility.
Supports gut health: By improving blood flow and muscle activity in the GI tract, VIP may benefit individuals with conditions like IBS. Studies also link VIP deficiency to altered gut microbiota.
Stimulates insulin secretion: VIP can transiently improve insulin sensitivity and stimulate glucose-dependent insulin secretion.
Normalizes hormone levels: It has been shown to help normalize estrogen and testosterone levels.
